Her Benny - Press Reviews

Published on 02 February 2018

Anne Dalton's much-loved 25th anniversary production of Her Benny has been breaking hearts in the Royal Court for just over a week now.  Reviewers from all across the land (Merseyside) came to see what all of the fuss is about and they had some pretty nice words to say.

The Stage: FOUR STARS

“a cast of the size rarely seen outside the West End adding definite va-va-voom to the big ensemble numbers, which are richly realised.”

“Dalton, meanwhile, has an eye for a striking tableau, even if she sometimes overeggs the dramatic pudding in a story already high on Victorian melodrama.”

Arts City Liverpool – FOUR STARS

“It’s impressively rendered, including the chaotic drunken cavorting outside the Addler's Arms, and a wonderful Hollywood-style celestial chorus which appears in Joe Wragg’s Vision”

“Her Benny is an uplifting moral tale and a crowd-pleaser with a warm heart.”

Wirral Globe: FOUR STARS

“This much-loved local tale of faith, hope and charity is now celebrating 25 years of success. […] Each new take on it stamps its own mark on a touching fictional story of love, loss and loyalty.”

North West End – FOUR STARS

“Overall a great musical and well worth a visit to The Royal Court. A Haunting musical score, lovely costumes and talented cast. Be warned have the tissues ready.”

Liverpool Echo What’s On

“This could be the year that Her Benny joins an exclusive theatrical band made up of the esteemed likes of Shirley Valentine and Blood Brothers.”

“There is a naive charm on display here that’s perfect for warming up an evening in one of the most miserable winters we’ve known for a long time.”

“After a quarter of a century and judging by the enthusiastic response at the close of the show, Benny has certainly found his audience.”
