Coffee, Cake and Café38

Liverpool is not short of places to stop for a cuppa. However, does any other café have as much history as ours does? Probably not.
The café in the theatre came about as part of Act 2 when we extended the front of the building to create a brand new foyer space. The result? A huge rounded window overlooking Queen Square, a perfect spot to watch the world go by.
Something was missing with the café though and we couldn’t quite put our finger on it. How can we use that space in the heart of the theatre, a theatre steeped in history?
Along came Café38. We can use the space to commemorate a key year for us, our 80th birthday. You see, the building that you know and love opened in 1938 and has been going strong for the past 80 years.
We wanted to open up this space to the public. You can come in, grab a coffee and learn about the theatre’s wonderful history. When you sit down, some of our most famous performers overlook you.
Dame Judi Dench, Dame Margot Fonteyn, Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier and Marlene Dietrich all hang over the café.
Café38 is open 10am – 6pm, Monday to Saturday. We sell hot drinks and homemade cakes alongside a selection of sandwiches and Panini.
